NATURE, EXPERIENCED
As a wildlife ecologist and conservationist, my interest in the natural world extends far beyond its aesthetics. I strive to bring that perspective to my art, implicitly and explicitly.
- What does it mean to photograph an endangered species?
- Does a flower become more beautiful if you know its habitat is nearly extinct?
- What does a map of streets say about the environment around them?
I experience nature as a constant clash of wonder, despair, and curiosity. I can see vacant lots as natural miracles if they harbor native species and lush forests as wastelands if their trees are all introduced. I feel I know far too much and far too little.
Exploring the breadth of ecological context surrounding each image and map is impossible. Instead, the point of my work is simple: nature is never just nature. A plant is never just a plant. An animal is never just an animal. A mountain is never just a mountain.
I invite you to explore this website. I've done my best to identify species and share more information about them and their ecosystems.
Prints are available for all images and maps (working on this), and I offer custom cartography services. Please reach out if you'd like a specific print or map made.
If you see missing information, it's because you're here early! I'm still building the site out.
