Remnant Hope. A vibrant patch of Palouse Prairie, dotted with yellow Arrowleaf Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata) wildflowers and blooming Saskatoon trees (Amelanchier alnifolia), appears under a pink and purple hued sky at sunrise. The Palouse Prairie is one of the most endangered ecosystems on Earth, with less than 1% of native prairie remaining intact. The trouble started when European settlers migrated westward and found the deep, fertile soils that make up the rolling hills of this region of eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Indigenous people were quickly forced away and land converted for farming, with the Palouse now one of the most productive places for dryland agriculture globally. What places couldn't be plowed turned into grazing land for sheep and cattle. I stumbled on this patch of intact prairie at the top of a canyon adjacent to the Snake River. Just out of frame, the abundance of life transitions to fields of wheat.
